Officially created by the NCAA in 1973, D-III is the network of smaller college football programs that does not allow athletic scholarships. Played in Phenix City (AL), Wittenberg (OH) blanked Juniata (PA) 41-0 in the inaugural D-III championship game at the conclusion of 1973 campaign that has evolved into the Stagg Bowl. It has been hosted by Salem (VA) since 1993.
